Deer Manager
Our company is seeking a capable Deer Manager who is passionate about the deer industry to lead in the day to day running of our commercial and Red Deer Stud operation that breeds deer and finishes additional stock, along with a velveting herd based in Wendonside, Northern Southland.
Some key events in our annual deer stud calendar include a multi-day AI programme, Embryo Transfer programme, EMA and CT Scanning. In addition, we sell 2-year-old breeding stags for venison and velvet with 2 sales a year: one in the North Island in December and one in South Island in January.
This is a good opportunity for somebody to be involved in a longstanding deer operation using modern equipment & techniques to achieve maximum commercial production & stud breeding gains.
This is role will involve stock work, maintenance, and a small amount of tractor work (mowing, fencing, and feeding out in the winter). We use modern Gallagher recording equipment to record animal liveweights and other important traits throughout the season.
We need a person who works well in a team and can work unsupervised with requirement to make responsible management decisions, show good initiative, and direct other people in the workplace including contractors, be a good communicator.
Personnel Requirements:
• Demonstrate a passion for agriculture and working with animals
• Have a willingness to learn and take pride in their work
• A can do, positive team attitude and good work ethic
• Have a current, valid full driver’s license
• Be an effective and energetic communicator
• Computer literacy for stud records
• Two years farming experience an advantage but not essential (does not have to be deer experience) Sound stock skills are an important prerequisite for this role
• Able to take instruction & follow through with a strong focus on quality, independently or supervised
• Excellent time management skills with the ability to adapt and time recording skills
• Be highly motivated and be willing to learn new skills along with using initiative
• Demonstrate history of work safety and robust understanding of Health & Safety regulation within the industry
• Take pride in maintaining a clean and tidy workplace, machinery, and stock yards
• Demonstrate passion, enthusiasm and integrity
